Helping your son or daughter make the right decision about their career can be difficult.  The world of work has changed so much.  Luckily there are simple, practical things you can do to give your child valuable career guidance.

Encourage your child to keep their options open.  Remember, some subjects such as maths and science open up wider opportunities.  Encourage them not to make premature choices.

Try not to impose your feelings on your child, but help them gather new information.

Help your child approach school like a job and they will learn the basic skills that employers most value: communication/interpersonal skills, creative problem solving, numeracy, language, technology, business and learning skills.

The Department funds the Employment Directions Network (“EDN”) to run free seminars called “Parents as Career Partners".  Attend these seminars and you will learn: where the real opportunities are for your child, what they need to do to achieve their career goals and where to find the right information.  You can attend on your own or together with your son or daughter.

Ring the Employment Directions Network on 13 64 64 to attend a seminar.
